About SkyCAM
African SkyCAM was among 20 projects selected for funding in the inaugural African News Innovation Challenge. The goal of SkyCAM is to revolutionise frontline reporting using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by establishing drone journalism teams in Africa. The project is experimenting with mass produced UAVs as well as camera-equipped balloons.

The Team.
Dickens Olewe is a journalism pioneer. He’s the founder of AfricanSkyCAM. Olewe is a 2014-15 Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University?? – he’s working on developing best practice guidelines to encourage responsible and safe use of drones in journalism.
Dickens was the Digital Content Manager at the Star newspaper in Nairobi, Kenya before leaving for Stanford. He led the setting up the newspaper’s website and its digital strategy; he also led a project on collaborative journalism that involved citizens contributing stories through a mobile app. He also led the creation of a health data portal to kickstart data journalism in the newsroom. He currently advises Hivisasa.com, a mobile news startup in Kenya. More About Dickens
Ben Kreimer
Ben is a maker/artist, journalism technologist and DJ/producer. Exploring the frontiers of electronic journalism at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Drone Journalism Lab, he is pioneering the use of aerial drones and crowdsourced microcomputer sensor platforms as new tools for gathering data and sharing information.
As an electronic DJ/producer, Ben has performed in Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, San Francisco, and abroad in India, Sri Lanka, and China. He also worked for five years as a DJ on the radio, hosting and mixing for a weekly show on Lincoln???s 90.3 KRNU.
Ben received his Bachelor of Journalism degree with academic distinction honors from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. To satisfy his passion for scholarship, Ben minored in history, focusing on European colonization, decolonization and postcolonial studies.
He is currently developing a crowd sourced sensor journalism device for Columbia University’s Tow Center for Digital Journalism. More about Ben
