CCTV Africa has partnered with the drone journalism project AfricanSkyCam in order to give its audiences a different perspective on Kenya’s wild spaces and wild animals. We believe that the interactive nature of drone filming will enable our viewers to experience the continent’s wildlife heritage in new and exciting ways.
The goal of SkyCAM is to revolutionise frontline reporting in Africa using drone technology. The partnership with CCTV Africa provides us with an exciting opportunity to partner with an Afrocentric media to showcase the use of unmanned aerial vehicles which we believe will enrich story telling and broadcast coverage across the continent.
Taking advantage of the visit to Kenya of Ben Kreimer from the Drone Journalism Lab at the University of Nebraska, CCTV Africa and the AfricanSkyCam project visited the Ol Pejeta conservancy to film the park and its animals. We spent 48 hours exploring the different landscapes of Ol Pejeta and capturing the different species we found.
A jackal leapt up at the drone as it flew overhead, baboons chattered at the vehicle whilst it circled their tree perch and grazing elephants ignored us as they grazed impassively on the marsh swamps. With all the species we filmed we found new insights and were able to engage with them as would have never been possible with a standard film crew.
